Maltese Premier League 2008/09
The 2008/09 Maltese Premier League was the 94th season of the Maltese Premier League , the top division in Maltese football. The season began on August 23, 2008 with a goalless tie between FC Floriana and the Ħamrun Spartans and ended on May 24, 2009 with another goalless tie between Hibernians Paola and FC Valletta . The first goal of the season was scored by the Brazilian Ivan from FC Qormi on August 24, 2008 against FC Marsaxlokk . Before the season, FC Qormi and the Tarxien Rainbows were promoted from the second division, the Maltese First Division .
The champions were the Hibernians Paola , who prevailed by two points against defending champion Valletta . For the Hibs this is the tenth championship in the club's history, after the last was celebrated in 2002.
The season was dominated by the Hibernians and FC Valletta, in the final table both teams had a positive goal difference and 15 (Hibernians) and 13 (Valletta) points ahead of the third-placed team from FC Birkirkara . Birkirkara and Valletta will take part in the first qualifying round of the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League , while the champions from Paola will play in the first qualifying round of the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League .
The top scorer was Maltese international Terence Scerri , who stormed for the Hibernians Paola , with 26 goals . The FC Msida Saint Joseph and Ħamrun Spartans got down to the second division at the end of the season.

In the first round (First Round) every ten teams compete against each other twice, resulting in a total of 18 days game result. The league is then divided into two groups. The teams in places 1 to 6 play in a championship round (Championship Pool) for the championship and international business, while the four remaining teams in a relegation round (Relegation Pool) determine two teams that are relegated to the Maltese First Division . The points earned in the first round are halved for the second round (example: Team A earns 30 points in the first round, so starts the second round with 15 points in the account). In the second round, too, all teams within their group play two games against each other.

Playoff
The Tarxien Rainbows, FC Msida Saint Joseph and the Ħamrun Spartans tied on points after the last game day. Therefore, the points from their relegation round games were used against each other: The team that scored the fewest points in these six games is relegated directly; these were the Spartans (4 points). Then the four games of the two remaining teams are considered against each other. Since the Rainbows and Msida Saint Joseph played twice against each other, the relegation was decided on May 8, 2009 in a relegation game. The game ended 1: 1 after the regular playing time, in the penalty shootout the Rainbows won 5: 4 and thus remained in the league.

The Maltese Premier League games were played in three stadiums in 2008/09. Most (101 league games) were played in the Ta 'Qali Stadium , Malta's national stadium , in Attard ; the stadium holds 17,000 spectators.
In addition, 17 league games and the playoff for relegation took place in the 8,000-seat Hibernians Ground at Paola , 14 league games were played in the Victor Tedesco Stadium ; The latter is located in Ħamrun and seats 1,800 people.
