Playoff

The Tarxien Rainbows, FC Msida Saint Joseph and the Ħamrun Spartans tied on points after the last game day. Therefore, the points from their relegation round games were used against each other: The team that scored the fewest points in these six games is relegated directly; these were the Spartans (4 points). Then the four games of the two remaining teams are considered against each other. Since the Rainbows and Msida Saint Joseph played twice against each other, the relegation was decided on May 8, 2009 in a relegation game. The game ended 1: 1 after the regular playing time, in the penalty shootout the Rainbows won 5: 4 and thus remained in the league.
