The First Division 1976/77 was the 62nd season in the history of the highest Maltese football league . FC Floriana became champions for the 24th time .

Compared to the previous season , the newly promoted Ħamrun Spartans and Vittoriosa Stars replaced the relegated FC Marsa and FC Birkirkara . Ħamrun was first class again since the 1973/74 season , Vittoriosa for the first time since the 1955/56 season .

The season was played back and forth. There were two points for a win, one point for a draw and no point for a loss. In the event of a tie, a decision game was played for the championship and the relegation places. The last two placed had to be relegated to the Second Division.
