The First Division 1978/79 was the 64th season in the history of the highest Maltese football league . Hibernian's Paola became champion for the fourth time .

Compared to the previous season , the newly promoted FC Qormi and FC Għaxaq replaced the relegated FC Birkirkara and Vittoriosa Stars . Qormi was first class again since the 1973/74 season , Għaxaq belonged to the House of Lords for the first time.

mode

Initially, the ten teams played in two groups of five teams each in home and return matches. The first two players then played for the championship with two legs. The three last placed played with back and forth to the class, whereby the two thirds of the preliminary round two, the two fourths received a bonus point. In the event of a tie, a decision game was played for the championship and the relegation places. The last two placed had to be relegated to the Second Division.
