The 1985/86 Maltese Premier League was the 71st season in the history of the Maltese top football league . Rabat Ajax became champion for the second time .

Compared to the previous season , the newly promoted FC Birkirkara and FC Mqabba replaced the relegated FC Floriana and FC Marsa . Mqabba was first class, Birkirkara for the first time since the 1983/84 season .

The season was played back and forth. There were two points for a win, one point for a draw and no point for a loss. In the event of a tie, a decision game was played for the championship and the relegation places. The last two placed had to relegate to the First Division.
