The Maltese Premier League 1980/81 was the 66th season in the history of the highest Maltese football league . Champion was Hibernian's Paola for the fifth time . Before the start of the season, the league was renamed the Maltese Premier League and reduced to eight teams.

Compared to the previous season , newly promoted FC Żurrieq replaced relegated Żebbuġ Rangers , FC Qormi and FC St. George’s . Żurrieq was first class for the first time.

The season was played back and forth. There were two points for a win, one point for a draw and no point for a loss. In the event of a tie, a decision game was played for the championship and the relegation places. The last two placed had to relegate to the First Division.
