The First Division 1972/73 was the 58th season in the history of the highest Maltese football league . FC Floriana became champions for the 22nd time .

Compared to the previous season , the newly promoted FC St. George’s and FC Żabbar St. Patrick replaced the relegated Żebbuġ Rangers and FC Qormi . St. George's was represented for the first time since the 1968/69 season , St. Patrick since the 1961/62 season .

The season was played back and forth. There were two points for a win, one point for a draw and no point for a loss. In the event of a tie, a decision game was played for the championship and the relegation places. The last two placed had to be relegated to the Second Division.
