The Maltese Premier League 2009/10 was the 95th season of the Maltese Premier League , the top division in Maltese football. The season began on August 21, 2009 with a 3-1 victory for FC Valletta over FC Birkirkara and ended on May 5, 2010 with a 4-2 victory for FC Valletta over FC Birkirkara. The champions were FC Birkirkara, one point ahead of FC Valletta. For the Stripes , this represents the third championship in the club's history, after the title had already been celebrated in 2000 and 2006.
At the end of the 2008/09 season, the Ħamrun Spartans and FC Msida Saint Joseph occupied the bottom of the Maltese Premier League, which resulted in relegation to the Maltese First Division . The Dingli Swallows and the Vittoriosa Stars were promoted to the Premier League in their place. After the first day of the season, however, the Vittoriosa Stars and after the second day of the season also FC Marsaxlokk were transferred to the First Division as officials of the clubs were guilty of bribery. In order not to have to play the league with only eight teams, it was decided to take the Ħamrun Spartans and FC Msida Saint Joseph back into the Premier League. The three games in which FC Marsaxlokk and Vittoriosa Stars had already participated were set to zero; instead, the first two games of the Ħamrun Spartans and FC Msida Saint Joseph were made up.
The top scorer was Brazilian Camilo, who storms for FC Qormi , with 24 goals . The FC Msida Saint Joseph and Dingli Swallows rose at the end of the season from the second division, the team of Msida with a 10-point deduction was punished because they could not pay some unpaid salaries.
In the first round (First Round) every ten teams compete against each other twice, resulting in a total of 18 days game result. The league is then divided into two groups. The teams in first place with 6 games in a championship pool for the championship and international business, while the four remaining teams in a relegation pool determine two teams that are relegated to the Maltese First Division . The points earned in the first round are halved for the second round, with commercial rounding being used (example: If a team scores 39 points in the first round, it starts the second round with 20 points). In the second round, too, all teams within their group play two games against each other.
