The 2001/02 Maltese Premier League was the 87th season in the history of the Maltese top football league . Master was Hibernian's Paola for the ninth time .

Compared to the previous season , the newly promoted Lija Athletics and FC Marsa replaced the relegated Rabat Ajax and Xgħajra Tornadoes . Lija was first class again since the 1996/97 season , Marsa for the first time since the 1984/85 season .

mode

First, a preliminary round with home and away legs was played. The first six teams qualified for the championship round, the remaining four for the relegation round. Half of the points achieved in the preliminary round were taken over, rounded up if necessary. There were three points for a win, one for a draw and no point for a loss. In the event of a tie, a decision game was provided for the decision about the championship and the relegation places. The last two placed had to relegate to the First Division.
