The 1. HNL 2001/02 was the eleventh season of the highest Croatian football league . The season started on July 28, 2001 and ended on May 4, 2002.

The defending champion was HNK Hajduk Split .

The league was increased to 16 teams. The twelve clubs from the previous season also included four promoted teams from the 2nd HNL . Since a reduction to twelve teams was sought again for the following season, four teams were relegated directly, and two clubs had to be relegated.
