The 1. HNL 2008/09 was the 18th season of the highest Croatian football league . The season began on July 27, 2008 and ended on May 31, 2009.
Dinamo Zagreb was able to successfully defend its title.
mode
The 12 participating teams competed against each other three times on 33 match days.
Since the league was increased to 16 participants from the next season , no team had to relegate directly to the second division. The first four teams in the second division should go straight up. Since the fourth-placed NK Slavonac did not receive a license for the 1st HNL, Međimurje Čakovec rose directly to fifth. The last placed in the first division had to be relegated. There NK Croatia Sesvete defeated the sixth-placed NK Hrvatski Dragovoljac of the second division and thus managed to stay in the league.
