The Orange Ekstraklasa 2008/09 was the 75th edition of the Polish top division in football . The season started on August 8, 2008 and ended on May 30, 2009. Defending champion Wisła Krakow became Polish champions for the twelfth time.
16 teams played against each other twice on a total of 30 match days, divided into a first half and a second half. Four clubs were promoted from the 1st division in 2007/08: Lechia Gdańsk , Śląsk Wrocław , Piast Gliwice and Arka Gdynia, which replaced the relegated Widzew Łódź , as well as the three clubs, Zagłębie Sosnowiec , Zagłębie Lubin and Korona Kielce , who were punished by corruption .
In July 2008, Dyskobolia Grodzisk Wielkopolski merged with Polonia Warsaw . The club from the capital took the place of Dyskobolia in the Ekstraklasa. Sports relegated were Cracovia Krakau and Górnik Zabrze, who could not realize relegation on the last match day. However, ŁKS Łódź was placed in last place in the table and the license revoked, so that Cracovia Krakau secured relegation at the end of the green table. The traditional club Górnik Zabrze, however, had to relegate to the second division.
Likewise, the second division champion Widzew Łódź was denied the license and thus the promotion to the Ekstraklasa; an appeal by Widzew Łódź against this decision was rejected. The planned relegation games did not take place.
