The Ekstraklasa 2012/13 was the 79th season of the top Polish football league of men since its founding in 1927. The season began on 18 August 2012 and ended on 1 June 2013. A total of sixteen teams participated in the 2012 season / 13 part. First place qualified for the 2nd qualifying round of the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League , second place and third place qualified for the 2nd qualifying round of the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League . The last two clubs were relegated to the first division . The defending champion is Śląsk Wrocław , which last year won its second Polish championship title after 1977. Newcomers from the second Polish division are Piast Gliwice and Pogoń Szczecin .
Season course
In early March 2013, Zagłębie Lubin was deducted three points from the Polish Football Association . The reason for this was the game manipulation of the club on the last day of the 2005/06 season in the game against Cracovia Krakow (0-0). The draw secured the club a place in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup . In mid-July, the traditional association Polonia Warsaw was sold to the entrepreneur Ireneusz Król . For the equivalent of around 1.25 million euros , he bought the club from the former owner Józef Wojciechowski . However, the club retained the rights to the logo and the name, so that a restart in the 4th division should be possible. The new first division club should be called KP Katowice . A planned merger with the second division club GKS Katowice failed. In the end, the new owner decided to continue with the club as Polonia Warsaw in the Ekstraklasa. On matchday 14, Legia Warsaw was the autumn champions after a 3-0 win against Ruch Chorzów . Legia led the table with 33 points, four points ahead of Lech Posen . On the relegation places were GKS Bełchatów and Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biała with only six points from 15 games already nine points away from the saving bank. On May 25, 2013 Legia Warsaw was the champions of the 2012/13 season after a 1-1 draw against Widzew Łódź two game days before the end. The runner-up Lech Poznan lost 2-0 to Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biała that match day, so Legia Warsaw had six points ahead and won the direct comparison. Three days later, the financially troubled club Polonia Warsaw did not get a license for the next season from the Polish Football Association, which is why the club was the first to be relegated. Thus, from a sporting point of view, only the last one had to get down from the Ekstraklasa. The decision on who was relegated was only made on the last day of the match after GKS Bełchatów and Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biała, who were far behind in the first half of the season, started a brilliant comeback in the second half. Before the last matchday, GKS Bełchatów was last with 28 points, Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biała second last with 29 points and Ruch Chorzów third from bottom with 31 points. While GKS Bełchatów and Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biała won their last game, Ruch Chorzów lost on the last match day. Thus Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biała was saved with 32 points and GKS Bełchatów and Ruch Chorzów with 31 points each at the bottom of the table. Since the direct comparison counts in the event of a tie, Ruch Chorzów was penultimate and GKS Bełchatów was relegated, as Ruch Chorzów won the games 2-1 and 3-0. While champions Legia Warsaw qualified for the Champions League qualification, the second Lech Poznan and the third Śląsk Wrocław qualified for the Europa League qualification. Since the cup winner Legia Warsaw and the finalist Śląsk Wrocław both qualified for an international competition via the championship, the fourth in the table and promoted Piast Gliwice moved up as a participant in the Europa League qualification.
