The Miejski Stadium ( German  Städtisches Stadion ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Polish city of Chorzów ( German  Königshütte OS ). It currently offers seats for 10,000 spectators and has been the venue for third division team Ruch Chorzów since it opened on September 29, 1935 . The stadium is owned by the City of Chorzów.

history

Ruch Wielkie Hajduki (since 1939: Ruch Chorzów) was a founding member of the Ekstraklasa in 1927, but the national stadium Na Kalinie was not approved for play by the Polish Football Association . Therefore Ruch Wielkie Hajduki ( Bismarckhütte ) had to move to Kattowitz and Königshütte OS . With the first championship in 1933, the idea of building a modern stadium also matured. In December 1933 the local council announced the construction of a new stadium. Construction began on July 1, 1934. The municipal stadium was completed in record time and opened on September 29, 1935 with a game between Ruch Wielkie Hajduki and Warta Posen (1-1). It had a capacity of 40,000 and was the most modern stadium in Poland at the time. Only six months later, the roofing of the main stand was completed by an American company. It was the first canopy in the world that did not require load-bearing support beams and thus did not limit the viewer's field of vision.

During the Second World War , the stadium was damaged and had to be renovated. The capacity at that time was increased from only 16,000 to 20,000 spectators. The first league game after the war took place in 1948. Ruch Chorzów beat Garbarnia Kraków 1-0.

On August 21, 1958, the game Ruch Chorzów against Polonia Bytom took place in the stadium in front of a record crowd of 55,000 spectators.

In 1961 the stadium was extensively renovated during a general overhaul. The capacity increased to 41,000 spectators and the playing field was also redesigned. Another important construction phase began with the construction of a floodlight system in April 1968 and, thanks to the active support of club fans, was completed in September 1968.

The stadium was not renovated again in the next few years. During the match between Ruch Chorzów and Widzew Łódź in 1993, the club secretary received a phone call that there was a bomb on the stadium grounds. Although the information turned out to be incorrect, the search revealed many security flaws that had to be remedied through further renovation. The result was the first seats to be installed in the main grandstand. The aging stadium disintegrated more and more in the following years and there was much discussion about a complete renovation of the stadium. However, this failed already in the planning phase and the capacity of the stadium continued to decline.

In 2002, major renovations were due again. The seating capacity was increased to 1,700 and a new entrance area was created. In addition, the fences between the field and the stands were gradually shortened.

After bloody clashes in the stadium in 2004 one was forced to further renovation work. The number of seats was increased to 7,500. In 2009 the field was also equipped with underfloor heating .

In 2010 it was decided to rebuild the stadium from 2012. The new facility is to be built in stages. In the end, the stadium should hold 18,000 spectators and meet category 3 of the UEFA stadium infrastructure regulations . The grandstand should be as close as possible to the playing field, which is why the maximum permissible slope should be used.

A special feature in the stadium is an antique clock from the Swiss watch manufacturer Omega , which was installed in the stadium in 1939 and is still running today.

New building plans

There are plans for a new municipal stadium. In 2013, GMT Mysłowice's design was selected for construction. The city council approved funding for preliminary work in January 2015. A start of the earthworks is planned for the end of 2015 to the beginning of 2016, then the new venue could be completed between 2018 and 2020. The building for a planned 96 million should offer 12,000 seats and the possibility of an expansion to 16,000 seats.
