Widzew Łódź [ ˈvidzɛf ˈwutɕ ] (officially RTS Widzew Łódź SA ) is a Polish football club named after the Widzew district of Łódź .

history

It was founded on November 5, 1910 as TMRF Widzew. The traditional team colors are red and white. The club is a four-time Polish champion and has also won the Polish Cup and the Polish Super Cup once. In the 1982/83 season they reached the semi-finals in the European Cup . After finishing 9th in the Polish championship in the 2002/03 game year , the following year they were relegated to the second division as the last in the table. Widzew Łódź managed in the 2005/06 season the immediate promotion to the Ekstraklasa as first in the table. In January 2008 the club was sentenced to relegation after a manipulation scandal and had to compete in the first division , the second highest Polish division , in the 2008/09 season . Actually, the club should be downgraded to the 2nd division , the third highest division, because Widzew would also have been relegated according to sporting criteria. However, it was decided to let Widzew compete in the first division.

The club has been privately owned by a Polish businessman since the 2008/09 season. Since Widzew finished the season after forced relegation as the first in the table, it was decided on June 25, 2009 by the sports court whether Widzew may compete in the 2009/10 season in the Ekstraklasa or have to stay another season in the 1st division. The Polish federation canceled the promotion and did not issue a license to the club. 2009/10 Widzew repeated the championship and achieved promotion to the Ekstraklasa. In the 2013/14 season the club finished last in the Ekstraklasa and was relegated to the first division. In 2014/15 Widzew could not keep the class in the first division, there were also considerable financial problems. Thereupon Widzew was withdrawn from the license for the 2nd division due to deficiencies in the licensing documents, by the Polish association PZPN, and downgraded to the fifth class 4th division for the 2015/16 season. Meanwhile, the construction of the new stadium is being pushed ahead. In the 2015/16 season Widzew was the first to secure promotion to the 3rd division (4th division). In the 2017/18 season, the club made it to the 2nd division .

Stadion

The team plays its home games in the Widzewa Stadium, built in 1930 . It was built in-house by the then members of the association and now offers space for 10,500 spectators (only seats). It also has a 1500 lux floodlight system. A new construction of the stadium is planned in the near future. Widzew will play his home games at the beginning of 2015 in Byczyna in the Miejski stadium.
