The 2nd division is the third highest division in Polish football . It was first held in 1953.

From 1953 until the 2007/08 season the competition was called the 3rd division, and from the 2008/09 season it was called the 2nd division. In the first few years the mode was changed again and again. The league usually consisted of two or four seasons, but at times there were also 16 or 20 seasons. From the summer of 1962, the season was no longer played in the calendar year, but the league was adapted to the system of the major European football leagues.

Since the 2008/09 season, 36 clubs played in the league, which were divided into two groups (West and East) with 18 clubs each. The first and second placed in each group went straight to the first division , the last four in each group were relegated to the third division .

On June 21, 2013, the Polish Football Association PZPN announced the merger of both groups into a league with 18 clubs from the 2014/15 season.
