The 1st league (sponsored name Fortuna 1st league ) is the second highest division in Polish football. It was founded on May 30, 1948 and was held for the first time in 1949. From 1949 to the 2007/08 season, the competition was called the 2nd division, and the 1st division from the 2008/09 season. In the first few years the mode was changed again and again. The league consisted of either one, two or four seasons. From the summer of 1962, the season was no longer played in the calendar year, but the league was adapted to the system of the major European football leagues. Since the 2008/09 season, 18 clubs have played in the Polish 1st division. The first and the second qualify directly for the Ekstraklasa . Since the 2019/20 season, the teams in places 3 to 6 have also played a third promoted team. The last three clubs are relegated directly to the 2nd division .
