mast

The Raichberg transmitter is located on the Raichberg in the southwestern Swabian Alb on the border of the Albstadt district of Onstmettingen in the Zollernalb district .

A basic network transmitter of the Südwestrundfunk (formerly the Südwestfunk ) for radio and television has been located there since 1950 . A 137 meter high, guyed tubular steel mast erected in 1971 and visible from afar is used as the antenna carrier. In addition, there is a directional radio tower designed as a free-standing steel lattice tower.

construction

The transmission mast consists of two segments: the lower part with a diameter of 1.50 meters carries the antennas for DAB , directional radio , mobile radio and VHF , the upper part the UHF antenna for DVB-T . Before the renovation in 2007, the transmission mast consisted of three segments with a total height of 147 meters.

history

The Raichberg transmitter went into operation on December 23, 1950 as a VHF transmitter for the first radio program of Südwestfunk, SWF 1 . At that time, the transmitting antenna was mounted on the observation tower , which is still close to the current transmitter. From December 24, 1954, a 57 meter high tubular steel mast was used as the antenna carrier. Since this transmitter mast could not carry the antennas for broadcasting the television program, the current, originally 147 meter high tubular steel mast went into operation in 1971. From September 20, 2007, the transmission mast was converted to the upcoming digital television DVB-T. For this purpose, the old analog VHF transmission antenna was dismantled and a new 62 meter high UHF antenna for DVB-T was installed. As a result, the transmission mast shrank from 147 to 137 meters.

Coverage area

The broadcaster's coverage area mainly comprises the Neckar-Alb region , the northern part of the Schwarzwald-Baar-Heuberg region and the southern part of the Northern Black Forest region . Due to its exposed location, the programs can also be received far beyond. Before the merger of SDR and SWF to form SWR in 1998, the Raichberg broadcaster played an important role in supplying the Stuttgart region with SWF programs, as the Stuttgart TV tower had previously broadcast the SDR programs.

Due to the hilly landscape of the Swabian Alb in a southerly direction, some of the valleys in the Zollernalb district and the Sigmaringen district sometimes have great reception difficulties. For this reason, filling transmitters for VHF radio are operated in Albstadt- Ebingen ( Malesfelsen ) and Albstadt- Pfeffingen ( transmitter Eyachtal ).

Digital television (DVB-T)

On November 27, 2007, the analog terrestrial broadcasting of the television program Das Erste was ended and the Raichberg station switched to DVB-T . The television converters for ZDF and SWR television were also shut down.

On October 24, 2018, the DVB-T transmitter was switched off without replacement.
