The Chemnitz-Reichenhain transmission tower is a nearly 100 m high transmission tower for radio relay, mobile communications and for the distribution of VHF and television programs. It was built in the mid-1980s on the Schenkenberg in the Reichenhain district of Chemnitz , originally 60 meters.

The Chemnitz-Reichenhain transmission tower is a steel lattice tower that was free until May 2007. In May / June 2007 it was upgraded for DVB-T broadcasting, for which purpose a cargo helicopter was used on June 13, 2007.

With the new antenna carrier with the DVB-T antennas, the tower grew to a height of 99 m. Due to the statics , it was braced on the ground, so that the tower became a hybrid tower . The original plan even provided for the height of the tower to be doubled to 120 m for the DVB-T installation. Due to the proximity of the location to residential buildings on Gornauer Strasse and Jägerschlößchenstrasse, the upgrade was very controversial because of the significantly higher radiation power of DVB-T compared to previous use (see electromagnetic environmental compatibility ) and led to the formation of a citizens' initiative.

Digital television (DVB-T2)

On September 26, 2018, the Chemnitz-Reichenhain transmitter switched to the DVB-T2 HD system. The broadcasts are simulcast (Single Frequency Network) using different transmitter locations. The programs of ARD ( MDR -Mux), ZDF and the commercial offer from freenet TV ( encoded in Irdeto ) are distributed in HEVC video coding and in Full HD resolution.

All channels shown in italics are encrypted and can only be received via the DVB-T2 HD platform freenet TV .
