Worldwide

Foundation and first years

Joseph M. Segel founded QVC in 1986 in the USA. Sailing, previously a mail order for commemorative coins had built and managed, managed, investors from the American cable television - industry to win. They often made airtime and reach available for their investments . The first broadcast of the new station took place on November 24, 1986, from January 1987 it broadcast around the clock. Initially around 20 providers tried their hand at the new teleshopping market, but their number quickly fell to two: QVC and HSN ( Home Shopping Network ). QVC grew organically and through company acquisitions in the first few years (acquisition of Fashion Channel in late 1989 , acquisition of CVN Shopping Channel in 1990 , acquisition of JC Penney Shopping Channel in May 1991 ). One factor in the company's success was its specific sales strategy. QVC did not primarily focus on low prices, but on product information that should be conveyed in the discussions between the moderators and product experts. Another factor was the involvement of celebrities , who used their name to promote sales of the respective product. These celebrities included Susan Lucci , Victoria Jackson and Diane von Fürstenberg . It was also possible to integrate some brand manufacturers who were testing teleshopping as a sales channel, such as Elizabeth Arden .

expansion

Segel retired in 1993. He was followed by Barry Diller , who previously founded and ran the Fox Broadcasting Company . Diller convinced other brand manufacturers to try QVC as a sales channel, including high-priced providers such as Saks Fifth Avenue . In mid-1993 a second channel went on air: QVC Fashion Channel ; a year later, management adapted its format and renamed it Q2 .

A bidding competition for Paramount marked the year 1993, QVC's rival Viacom prevailed in the end. In the following year, Diller attempted to merge with CBS . The project failed. Instead, Comcast and TCI made a joint takeover offer for QVC. This was successful in 1995 after the Federal Trade Commission approved.

In addition to takeover negotiations, Diller began the international expansion of the station. In 1993, QVC started teleshopping in Great Britain together with BSkyB . In the following year a joint venture with Grupo Televisa was established in order to gain access to the Latin American market. Diller was followed by Douglas Briggs to head QVC in 1995. He also drove the expansion. At the end of 1996, QVC first broadcast in Germany. At the end of 2000, the German program began to be fed into Austrian cable networks. Its Japanese program started the station in 2001. In the Internet , the company in the US was in 1996 under IQVC available and offered also for shopping. Two years later, QVC began making online purchases for customers in Canada and the UK.

The ownership structure of the company changed in 2003. Liberty Media (today's name: Qurate Retail Group ), then a subsidiary of AT&T , took over all Comcast shares in QVC for 7.9 billion US dollars and became the sole owner.

Michael George replaced Douglas Briggs at the helm two years later. Under his leadership, there was a cooperation with Oprah Winfrey and the NFL in 2007 . After a slight decline in sales as a result of the subprime crisis , the start of broadcasting operations in Italy in 2010 underscored the continuation of international expansion. Two years later, QVC and China National Radio (now CNR Media Group ) agreed a joint venture to open up the Chinese market. In August 2015, QVC expanded its business to France. That same year, QVC acquired Zulily , an internet retailer specializing in young mothers, for around $ 2.4 billion . In 2016 QVC announced the establishment of an international service center in Krakow . In 2017, Liberty Interactive finally acquired Home Shopping Network , QVC's longtime rival. Since then, both companies have operated as the Qurate Retail Group .

present

Today QVC is a multichannel retailer. In 2018, global sales were $ 11.28 billion. Half (51 percent) come from digital distribution channels (2018). The share of orders via mobile devices is 32 percent (2017). According to its own information, the company supplied around 370 million customers worldwide in 2018. The company employs around 21,400 people worldwide (as of the end of 2018). In March of the same year, the company began building its own distribution center in Baal , a district of Hückelhoven . It started operations in September 2002 and was officially inaugurated at the end of March 2003. The expansion of this logistics center was put into operation in October 2007.
