The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is an independent federal agency in the United States based in Washington, DC. It currently has 1,200 employees. The agency is headed by five commissioners who are nominated by the President of the United States and confirmed by the Senate. Under the FTC Act , no more than three Commissioners may belong to the same political party.

It was founded in 1914 as the successor to the Bureau of Corporations and is responsible for merger control and consumer protection . It acts on direct complaints from consumers or companies against individual companies. It may also undertake further investigations in response to inquiries from Congress or publications in the press.

The task of the authority is generally described as countering unfair and deceptive practices in order to ensure the functioning of a competitive market. It goes beyond the tasks of a competition authority in that it also performs consumer protection tasks.
