Robert Thompson Secrest (born January 22, 1904 in Senecaville , Ohio , †  May 15, 1994 in Cambridge , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1933 and 1966 he represented the state of Ohio three times in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Robert Secrest attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1926 the Muskingum College in New Concord . In 1931 and 1932 he directed the schools in Murray City . At the same time he was a member of the Democratic Party in the Ohio House of Representatives . In 1938 he studied law while serving as a congressman. By 1943 he was also enrolled at Columbia University in New York City . He also took some courses at English universities.

In the 1932 congressional election , Secrest was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 15th  constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Republican C. Ellis Moore on March 4, 1933 . After four re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on August 3, 1942 . During this time the New Deal laws of the Roosevelt government were passed there. In 1935, the provisions of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution were applied for the first time , according to which the legislative period of the Congress ends or begins on January 3rd. Since 1941, the work of the Congress was also shaped by the events of World War II .

Secret's resignation came because he was serving as a US Navy officer in World War II. He was used in England , Africa , Italy and the Pacific . In 1946 he applied unsuccessfully to return to Congress. In 1946 and 1947 he was legal advisor to the Library of Congress . In the elections of 1948 Secrest was re-elected to Congress in the 15th district of his state, where he replaced Percy W. Griffiths on January 3, 1949 , who had become his successor there in 1943. After two re-elections, he could remain in the US House of Representatives until his resignation on September 26, 1954. This time was determined by the events of the Cold War , the Korean War and, domestically, the beginning civil rights movement .

From 1954 to 1961 Secrest was a member of the Federal Trade Commission ; in 1962, he served as Ohio State Secretary of Commerce. In the elections of 1962 he was again elected to Congress. After a re-election he could remain there until his resignation on December 30, 1966. His resignation came four days before the end of the legislative period after he had not been confirmed in the previous elections in November 1966. During this time other events of the civil rights movement and the beginning of the Vietnam War took place .

Between 1969 and 1973, Secrest was a member of the Ohio Senate ; from 1978 to 1987 he was a member of the federal board of the veterans organization American Legion . He died in Cambridge on May 15, 1994 at the age of 90 and was buried in Senecaville.
