Milton I. Southard

Milton Isaiah Southard (born October 20, 1836 in Hanover , Licking County , Ohio , †  May 4, 1905 in Zanesville , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1879 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Milton Southard attended preparatory schools and then studied at Denison University in Granville . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1863, he began to work in this profession in Toledo . Between 1867 and 1871 he was a prosecutor in Muskingum County . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1872 Southard was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 13th  constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded George W. Morgan on March 4, 1873 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1879 . From 1875 to 1877 he was chairman of the Committee on Territories . After serving in the US House of Representatives, Southard moved to New York City , where he practiced as a lawyer. He died on May 4, 1905 in Zanesville, where he was buried.
