J. William Stanton (1981)

John William Stanton (born February 20, 1924 in Painesville , Ohio , †  April 11, 2002 in Jacksonville , Florida ) was an American politician . Between 1965 and 1983 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1942, William Stanton graduated from the Culver Military Academy in Indiana . That same year he was enrolled in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University . During the Second World War he served in the US Army between 1942 and 1946 . In 1949 he finished his education at Georgetown University. Then he worked as a private businessman. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1956 and 1960 he was elected Lake County district director.

In the 1964 congressional election , Stanton was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the eleventh constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Oliver P. Bolton on January 3, 1965 . After eight re-elections, he was able to complete nine legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1983 . His time in Congress included the Vietnam War , the end of the civil rights movement and, in 1974, the Watergate affair . In 1982 he renounced another candidacy.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, William Stanton worked for the World Bank . He died on April 11, 2002 in Jacksonville and was buried in his native Painesville.
