Charles Elwood Brown (* 4. July 1834 in Cincinnati , Ohio ; † 22. May 1904 ) was an American politician of the Republican Party . March 4, 1885 to March 3, 1889 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the second  congressional district of the state of Ohio.

biography

Brown was born in Cincinnati. He attended schools there. He then studied law at Miami University . In 1859 he was admitted to the bar. He settled in Chillicothe and practiced there from then on as a lawyer. Between 1859 and 1860 he was district attorney of Ross County .

In 1861 he took up his military service in the US Army . He last served in the rank of colonel . In 1864 he lost his left leg in the Atlanta campaign . In 1865 he retired from military service. He was named Brigadier General by US President Andrew Johnson in 1865 for his services in the Atlanta Campaign Brevet .

Finally he worked as a lawyer again. He also held some positions in the service of the city of Chillicothe. In 1884 Brown was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Ohio's 2nd District. Once he was re-elected. In 1888 his party no longer nominated him. From 1900 to 1901 he was a member of the Ohio Senate . Brown died in Cincinnati in 1904. He was buried in Spring Grove Cemetery .
