William W. Irvin

William W. Irvin (born April 5, 1779 in Charlottesville , Virginia , †  March 27, 1842 in Lancaster , Ohio ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1829 and 1833 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Irvin enjoyed an academic education. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1800, he began to work in this profession in his home country. Around 1801 he moved his residence and his office to Lancaster in the Northwest Territory . In 1803 he became associate judge on the Court of Appeals in Fairfield County . The following year he was released from this office by the state legislature. Between 1806 and 1807 Irvin was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives ; from 1810 to 1815 he was a judge on the Supreme Court of Ohio . In the 1820s he joined the movement around the future President Andrew Jackson and became a member of the Democratic Party founded by this in 1828 . Between 1825 and 1827 he was again a member of the state parliament, as its president he served in 1825 and 1826.

In the 1828 congressional election , Irvin was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Philemon Beecher on March 4, 1829 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1833 . Since President Jackson took office in 1829, there has been heated debate inside and outside of Congress about its policies. It was about the controversial enforcement of the Indian Removal Act , the conflict with the state of South Carolina , which culminated in the nullification crisis , and the banking policy of the president.

In 1832, Irvin was not re-elected. After serving in the US House of Representatives, he returned to Lancaster, where he worked in agriculture on his farm. He died on May 27, 1842 in Lancaster, where he was also buried.
