John Welch

John Welch (born October 28, 1805 in New Athens , Harrison County , Ohio , †  August 5, 1891 in Athens , Ohio) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1851 and 1853 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Welch graduated from Franklin College after elementary school . In 1828 he settled in Rome , Athens County , where he worked in the milling business. After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began working in this profession in Athens in 1833. From 1841 to 1843 he was a prosecutor in Athens County. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Whig Party . He was a member of the Ohio Senate from 1845 to 1847 . In June 1852 he took part as a delegate at the Whigs federal party convention in Baltimore .

In the congressional elections of 1850 Welch was elected in the twelfth constituency of Ohio to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Samuel Finley Vinton on March 4, 1851 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1852, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1853 . After serving in the US House of Representatives, Welch returned to practice as a lawyer. Between 1862 and 1865 he served as an appeal judge. He was then an associate judge on the Supreme Court of Ohio . In 1877 and 1878 he was Chief Justice of his state as Chief Justice . He died on August 5, 1891 in Athens, where he was also buried.
