William Gordon

William Gordon (born December 15, 1862 in Oak Harbor , Ohio , † January 16, 1942 in Cleveland , Ohio) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . March 4, 1913 to March 3, 1919 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the 20th  congressional district of the state of Ohio.

biography

William Gordon was born on a farm near Oak Harbor in 1862. He attended public schools in Oak Harbor and went to college in Toledo . Before becoming a full-time politician, he was assistant treasurer of Ottawa County and a member of the school council from 1890 to 1896.

In 1893 he finished his law studies at the University of Michigan . In the same year he was admitted to the bar and practiced from then on in his hometown. From 1895 to 1901 he was a prosecutor in Ottawa County. 1896 was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago . In 1906 he moved to Cleveland, where he started a company called the Gordon Lumber Company . In 1910 he ran for a seat in the US House of Representatives for the first time, but successfully. In 1912 he moved into the House as a representative of the 20th District of Ohio. There he served three legislative terms and resigned in 1919.

He retired back to Cleveland, where he worked as a lawyer until his death on January 16, 1942. He was buried in Oak Harbor Cemetery in his hometown. Gordon was married to Elizabeth Gernhard from 1893 and they both had two children.
