Robert William "Bob" Ney (born July 5, 1954 in Wheeling , West Virginia ) is an American politician .

Ney graduated from Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1976 and then worked in the Ohio public sector. From 1981 to 1983 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives , and from 1985 to 1995 he was a member of the Ohio Senate . As a member of the Republican Party , he represented the 18th electoral district of Ohio in the United States House of Representatives from January 3, 1995 to November 3, 2006 . In October 2006, Ney pleaded guilty to conspiracy and false testimony related to the Jack Abramoff scandal . On November 3, 2006, shortly before the US congressional elections , he resigned from office.
