Oscar F. Moore

Oscar Fitzallen Moore (born January 27, 1817 in LaGrange , Lorain County , Ohio , †  June 24, 1885 in Waverly , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1855 and 1857 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Oscar Moore attended public schools in his home country and the Wellsburg Academy . In 1836 he graduated from Washington College in Washington ( Pennsylvania ). After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1838, he began to work in this profession from 1839 in Portsmouth . At the same time he embarked on a political career. In 1850 and 1851 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives ; from 1852 to 1853 he was a member of the State Senate .

In the congressional election of 1854 Moore was elected as a candidate for the opposition party in the tenth constituency of Ohio in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded John L. Taylor on March 4, 1855 . Since he was not confirmed in 1856, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1857 . This was shaped by the events leading up to the civil war .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Moore practiced as a lawyer in Portsmouth again. During the Civil War he served first as a lieutenant colonel and then as a colonel in an Ohio infantry regiment that was part of the Union Army . After that he continued his legal practice. He died in Waverly on June 24, 1885 and was buried in Portsmouth.
