James J. Winans

James January Winans (born June 7, 1818 in Maysville , Kentucky , †  April 28, 1879 in Xenia , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1869 and 1871 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In his youth, James Winans moved with his parents to Greene County , Ohio, where he attended public schools. He then studied at Transylvania University in Lexington . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1841, he began to work in this profession in Xenia in 1843. From 1845 to 1851 he was employed by the Greene County Court Administration. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1857 he was a member of the Ohio Senate ; in 1863 he was a member of the House of Representatives there. From 1864 to 1871 he worked as an appellate judge.

In the congressional election of 1868 Winans was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Democrat Samuel Shellabarger on March 4, 1869 . Since he lost to Shellabarger in 1870, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1871 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a lawyer again. James Winans died on April 28, 1879 in Xenia, where he was also buried.
