William Kennon Junior

William Kennon Jr. (born June 12, 1802 in Carrickfergus , United Kingdom , †  October 19, 1867 in St. Clairsville , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1847 and 1849 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Kennon was a cousin of the eponymous congressman William Kennon Sr. (1793-1881). In 1816 he and his parents moved from their Northern Irish homeland to near Barnesville , Ohio. He attended the public schools of his new home and then until 1826 Franklin College in New Athens . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1830, he began to work in St. Clairsville in this profession. Between 1837 and 1841 he was a prosecutor in Belmont County there . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1846 , Kennon was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 15th  constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Joseph Morris on March 4, 1847 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1848, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1849 . This was initially shaped by the events of the Mexican-American War .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Kennon practiced again as a lawyer. Between 1865 and 1867 he served as an appellate judge in the 15th judicial district of his state. He died on October 19, 1867 in St. Clairsville, where he was also buried.
