James M. Ritchie
James Monroe Ritchie (born July 28, 1829 in Dunfermline , Scotland , † August 17, 1918 in Toledo , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1883 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .
Career
In 1832, James Ritchie moved with his parents from his Scottish homeland to St. Lawrence County , New York . He received only a limited education and was temporarily homeschooled by his parents. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1858, he began to work in this profession in Toledo. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . In June 1880 he took part as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago , at which James A. Garfield was nominated as a candidate for president.
In the congressional election of 1880 Ritchie was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded William D. Hill on March 4, 1881 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1882, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1883 . After serving in the US House of Representatives, Ritchie returned to practice as a lawyer. He died in Toledo on August 17, 1918 and was buried in Grafton . His son Byron (1853-1928) was also a member of Congress.
