Elias Florence (born February 15, 1797 in Fauquier County , Virginia , †  November 21, 1880 in Muhlenberg , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1843 and 1845 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Elias Florence attended public schools in his home country and then worked in agriculture. He later moved to Circleville , Ohio, where he embarked on a political career. He was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives in 1829, 1830, 1834, and 1840 ; In 1835 he was a member of the State Senate . He joined the Whig Party , founded in the 1830s .

In the congressional elections of 1842 Florence was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded William Medill on March 4, 1843 . Until March 3, 1845 he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . This period was marked by tension between President John Tyler and the Whigs. In addition, a possible annexation of the Republic of Texas , which has been independent of Mexico since 1836, was already being discussed.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Elias Florence worked again in agriculture. In 1850 he was a delegate to a constitutional convention of his state. He died in Muhlenberg on November 21, 1880 and was buried in Circleville.
