George White

George White (born August 21, 1872 in Elmira , New York , † December 15, 1953 in Palm Beach , Florida ) was an American politician and from 1931 to 1935 the 52nd governor of the state of Ohio .

Early years

In 1874, White moved with his parents to Titusville , Pennsylvania . There he attended the local schools. He later studied at Princeton University until 1895 . He then worked in various positions, including a woodcutter, worked on the oil fields in Pennsylvania and worked for some time as a teacher. During the gold rush in Alaska , he also tried his luck on the Klondike . In 1902 he settled in Marietta, Ohio. There he got into the oil business. He has been involved in companies in various US states in this industry.

Political rise

George White was a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1905 and 1908 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives . From 1911 to 1915 and again from 1917 to 1919 he had a seat in the US House of Representatives in Washington . In 1920 he was chairman of the Democratic National Committee and campaign manager for James M. Cox when he ran for president. For the next ten years, White retired from politics and devoted himself to his oil business. In 1930 he returned to the political scene as his party's candidate for the gubernatorial elections.

Governor of ohio

After his election, he took up the new office on January 12, 1931 and, after being re-elected in 1933, held it until January 14, 1935. At the beginning of his reign, the country was still deep in the great economic crisis. Unemployment rose, banks collapsed and many citizens went hungry. The governor tried to solve the problem through tax policy. The breakthrough to improvement came only with the New Deal policy of the federal government under President Franklin D. Roosevelt . Although Ohio also benefited from Roosevelt's domestic policies, White was no friend of the president. In 1940 he even supported Wendell Willkie , Roosevelt's Republican candidate. A State Highway Patrol was established in Ohio during White's tenure as governor . A system to control alcohol consumption has also been introduced.

Another résumé

After his term in office, White returned to his private business, but also remained politically active. In 1940 he unsuccessfully sought another nomination for his party for gubernatorial elections. George White also served on the board of the People's Banking & Trust Company in Marietta. He was married twice and had a total of six children.
