history
Long before the arrival of the first Europeans, the area was settled by indigenous people - most recently the Cayuga from the Iroquois people. During the American Revolutionary War , the Continental Army ( Sullivan Expedition ) fought in this area against the British and their allied Iroquois, using a scorched earth tactic . As a result, European settlement began.
In 1792 the settlements of Newtown, Wisnerburg and DeWittsburg were merged and renamed the Town of Elmira in 1808 . The growing city developed into a center for trade. This was mainly done by water. To this end, a number of canals were built (Chemung Canal - completed in 1833, Junction Canal - completed in 1858), which connect to the Chemung River . In addition, the area was developed with railway lines. During the Civil War there was a prisoner-of-war camp of the Union Army here .
