Edward Drake Roe

Edward Drake Roe (born January 4, 1859 , Elmira ; † December 11, 1929 in Massachusetts ) was an American mathematician and university professor. From 1901 until his death he was John Raymond French Professor of Mathematics at Syracuse University and in 1914 founded the American Society of Honor for Mathematics Pi Mu Epsilon .

life and work

Roe studied at Syracuse University and received a bachelor's degree there in 1880 and also in 1885 from Harvard University, and in 1886 a master's degree from Harvard University . In 1890 he married Harriet Adelaide Bridge Gourley and adopted their daughter Mary Eva Gourley. After teaching at Harvard University and Boston University , he was an associate professor of mathematics at Oberlin College from 1892 to 1899 , where he was on leave from 1897 to 1899. During this time he conducted research with Paul Gordan at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and received his doctorate in 1898. In 1901 he received the Raymond French Professor of Mathematics at Syracuse University. In 1904 he took part in the 3rd International Congress of Mathematicians in Heidelberg and toured German universities. After his first wife died in 1898, he married the mathematician Josephine Robinson in 1911 . He published 26 articles in mathematics and several mathematical textbooks, and in 1914 founded the American honor society for mathematics Pi Mu Epsilon.

Astronomical activity

In 1906 he set up a private observatory on his own premises , equipped with an Alvan Clark equatorial telescope and considered to be one of the best-equipped private observatories in the country. In 1919 he was appointed director of the Holden Observatory in Syracuse. After his death, his wife and daughter gave his observatory and all equipment to Harvard College and also made a generous contribution towards the cost of a building to house the telescope. Roe was the founder and president of the Syracuse Astronomical Society.
