After the first edition of the tournament had no sponsor a year earlier, the tournament was sponsored by the Japanese company Yamaha for four years from this year and this year it was held under the name Yamaha Organs Trophy . The prize money tripled compared to the previous year to 27,600 pounds sterling , of which more than a third of £ 10,000 went to the winner.

Tournament course
Despite the new name, the Yamaha Organs Trophy took place in the same mode as the British Gold Cup last year. Sixteen players played a qualification in advance in four groups of four , with the respective group winner qualifying for the main round. In this, each of the four groups consisted of the qualifier and three other participants, so that a total of 28 players took part in the tournament. In the main round, as in the qualification, a simple round- robin tournament was played, whereby the respective group winner qualified for the semi-finals, from which the winner was determined in the knockout system . Up to and including the main round, all games ran over three frames. If two players took first place in a group at the end of the round-robin tournament, a one-frame play-off took place to determine the winner. The tournament continued with a best of 9 frames mode in the semifinals, which was followed by the finals in the best of 17 frames mode .
The Englishman Steve Davis was only a few years a professional player, but quickly rose to the top of the world and won the 1981 World Snooker Championship shortly after this tournament . So it was no surprise that he had won his group without any problems and reached the final with a 5-2 win over Dennis Taylor . In this he met David Taylor , who also came from England, but was a good 14 years older than Davis and a professional player for much longer, but had already achieved some minor successes. At this tournament he finished first in his group with Doug Mountjoy , defeated him in the play-off and then qualified for the final with a 5-3 win over the Canadian Kirk Stevens .
After a leisurely start to the game, Steve Davis dominated the game with three higher breaks of more than 50 points with a 5-1 lead. Taylor was able to shorten it to 5: 2, but Davis continued his winning streak with further high breaks until he reached 8: 2, so that he only needed one frame to win. But Taylor prevented the game from ending quickly and won, among other things with the help of a 62 break, four frames in a row before Davis won his last required frame to the final score of 9: 6.
The qualification took place before the start of the main round, but the exact dates are unknown. The sixteen participating players were divided into four groups of four and played a simple round-robin tournament , at the end of which a table was set up, the first-placed player could advance to the main round.
