The Yamaha International Masters 1982 , also called Yamaha Organs International Masters 1982 , was a professional snooker tournament without influence on the world rankings ( non-ranking tournament ) during the 1981/82 season . The main round of the tournament was held from March 1 to 7, 1982 in the Assembly Rooms of the English city ​​of Derby . The winner was defending champion Steve Davis , who defeated Terry Griffiths 9: 7 in the final. At the same time, the Englishman played the highest break of the tournament with a 135 break.

Prize money

As in the previous year, the tournament was sponsored by the Japanese company Yamaha , but the tournament was renamed again. Compared to the previous year, the prize money rose by a good £ 8,000 to £ 35,200, of which a little more than a quarter of £ 10,000 went to the winner.

Tournament course

After two years in the same tournament mode, this has now been changed: Even if eight qualifiers could now take part in the main round, four groups of four were formed again, but now the best two players in each group progressed. The semi-finals were now also played as a group stage, with the two best players in two groups playing against each other. The respective group winner qualified for the final. Also contrary to the previous year, the game was played in the best of 3 frames mode up to and including the semi-finals , but the mode of the final, best of 17 frames , remained the same.

As in the previous year, the reigning world champion Steve Davis had reached the final. If he had lost one game in the main group stage, he won all games in the semi-final group and thus easily qualified for the final. In this he met former world champion Terry Griffiths , who, unlike Davis, has not suffered a single defeat at this tournament so far.

The entire final was marked by high breaks of over 50 points. Griffiths dominated the beginning of the game, who took the lead with 1: 3, but then could not counter the equalizer of Davis to 3: 3. Davis then took the lead three times and Griffiths equalized each time until Davis was able to take the lead with two frames for the first time with a score of 6: 6. Griffiths shortened to 8: 7, but with a 135 break, the only century break of the endgame, Davis managed to win the decisive frame to the final score of 9: 7.

qualification

Qualification for the tournament began on January 2, 1982 and only ended over a month later on February 7, 1982. It began with a single game in a first round of the pre-qualification, followed by a second pre-qualification made up of four groups of three Qualification round followed. The first two in each group advanced to the third round of the pre-qualification, in which two players were also played in four groups of four who advanced to the final qualifying round. In this, two qualifiers were again sought in four groups of four per group.
