The MIM Britannia Unit Trusts British Open 1988 was a snooker tournament of the 1987/88 season , which took place from February 21 to March 6 in the Assembly Rooms in Derby . After the paint manufacturer Dulux had stopped sponsoring after three editions, the investment company MIM Britannia became the new namesake in the fourth edition of the tournament .
Defending champion Jimmy White made it to the quarterfinals, where he was narrowly defeated by Stephen Hendry . The Scot marched through to the final, where he defeated Mike Hallett 13-2. It was the highest result in the history of the British Open. A few months earlier, Hendry had won the World Doubles Championship together with Hallett . The British Open win was the third individual title for Hendry this season.
Main tournament
The top 32 of the world rankings were set for the main tournament. The players from 33rd place played two qualifying rounds, which resulted in a further 32 players who were then drawn into the top 32. The format remained unchanged, in particular the best-of-25 final, which had been introduced the previous year, was retained.
