final
Terry Griffiths - 1979 World Champion - had made his fourth final appearance at the Welsh professional championship perfect with narrow victories over Tony Chappel and Cliff Wilson . He met Wayne Jones , who had previously only defeated the six-time world champion Ray Reardon and broken his series of six consecutive finals at this tournament by a 9-5 victory in the semifinals over Doug Mountjoy .
Mostly safe, Griffiths took a 5-0 lead before Jones managed to cut it to 5-2. Subsequently, however, his opponent extended his lead to 8-2, so that Jones could only delay the certain defeat by winning the next frame: With the 12th frame of the game, which went 83:13 to Griffiths, Griffiths won his third Title in this tournament. For Jones it was the first of two lost professional ends; the second he lost to Doug Mountjoy at the 1989 Classic .
