Colin Roscoe (born June 30, 1945 ) is a former Welsh snooker player who was a professional player for a total of fourteen years between 1981 and 1995 after winning the Welsh Snooker Championship in 1981.

Career

Beginnings as an amateur

Roscoe first drew attention to himself when he reached the semifinals of the Welsh Snooker Championship in 1976 , where he lost to Alwyn Lloyd . After losing in the quarterfinals the following year, he reached the finals of the northern qualifying competition for the English Amateur Championship in 1979 with wins over Mike Hallett , Billy Kelly and Joe Johnson , where he was defeated by Dave Martin . In the same year he reached the final of the Pontins Spring Open with a victory over Jim Chambers , in which he had to admit defeat to the multiple world champion John Spencer .

A year later he again reached the final of the northern qualifying competition of the English Championship, in which he lost again to Dave Martin with 3: 8. A year later he defeated Alwyn Lloyd at the Welsh championship, among others, before becoming the Welsh champion in the final with a 9-5 win over Elwyn Richards. Following this, Roscoe became a professional player.

First professional years

At the start of his first professional season , Roscoe reached the third round at both the International Open and the UK Championship and lost his opening game at the Welsh Professional Championship . At the end of the season he defeated the Canadian Bernie Mikkelsen in qualifying for the snooker world championship , before losing to the Englishman Willie Thorne in the final round and thus missed a place in the world rankings and thus remained unplaced.

As of the following season , the status of a ranking tournament was gradually raised alongside the snooker world championship . At the beginning of the season, Wilson reached the round of 32 at one of these tournaments, the International Open , before losing his opening game at the Professional Players Tournament . The rest of the season he lost the UK Championship in the round of 48 against Mark Wildman , participated unsuccessfully in the International Masters and lost his opening games at the Welsh Professional Championship and in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship . Nevertheless, he was able to place himself on the world rankings for the first time at the end of the season and finished 46th in the following season.

In the 1983/84 season , however, Roscoe lost his opening games at the International Open , the Professional Players Tournament , the UK Championship and the Welsh Professional Championship and also took part again unsuccessfully in the International Masters . In contrast, he reached the last sixteen at the Classic , now also a world ranking tournament, with victories over George Ganim , Graham Miles and Bill Werbeniuk and lost in this against Terry Griffiths . At the end of the season he also defeated the Scots Bert Demarco in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship , before losing to Irish Paddy Browne two rounds before the main round . This resulted in an improvement from seven places to 39th place in the world rankings.

The next season began for Roscoe with a participation in the round of 48 of the International Open and a participation in the round of 64 of the Grand Prix . In the following five tournaments until the end of the season, however, Roscoe could not win his opening game once, with only in the UK Championship in his game against Jack McLaughlin reached the decision frame, but lost it. In the world rankings, however, he only lost six places.

Years outside the best 64

In the 1985/86 season , Roscoe only lost four opening games and instead reached the round of the Matchroom Trophy with a victory over Geoff Foulds , the British Open with a victory over Bernie Mikkelsen and in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship against Geoff Foulds again the round of last 64 in which he lost to Cliff Wilson , John Parrott and Warren King . As a result, he slipped to 74th place in the world rankings.

The following season , Roscoe only lost his opening game at the Grand Prix and lost to Doug Mountjoy in the quarterfinals of the Welsh Professional Championship . Apart from that, he reached the round of 64 at the UK Championship , the Classic and the British Open as well as the round of the last 96 at the International Open and in qualifying for the Snooker World Championship. On the world rankings this meant a loss of four places , which placed him in 78th place.

Also in the 1987/88 season Roscoe lost two opening games, again at the Welsh Professional Championship and the UK Championship . He also retired at the Grand Prix and again in the qualification for the Snooker World Championship in the round of 96 and at the International Open and the British Open in the round of 64. At the Classic he reached the round of 32 with victories over Paul Watchorn , Wayne Jones and Eddie Charlton and was defeated by Tony Knowles from England . This was enough in terms of the world rankings for an improvement to 67th, which he just missed the return to the top 64 ranks.

Years in the top 50

During the 1988/89 season Roscoe lost four more opening games and reached the second round of the second WPBSA non-ranking event with wins over Mike Watterson and Graham Cripsey . Apart from that, he was eliminated from the International Open and the European Open in the round of 96 and the Classic in the round of 64. In contrast, he moved into the round of 32 at both the Canadian Masters and the UK Championship and also at the British Open , before losing to David Taylor , Stephen Hendry and Tony Meo in this round . On the world rankings he improved to 48th place.

With the next season , the number of his opening defeats rose to six. However, he also reached the round of 64 at the Hong Kong Open , the Grand Prix and the Classic and also the round of 32 of the Asian Open with wins over Barry Pinches and Jimmy White , in which he was defeated by Peter Francisco . However, he achieved his best season and best result of his career at the European Open , where he defeated Mark Wildman , Peter Francisco, John Virgo and Nick Dyson before losing to Steve James in the quarterfinals . Nevertheless, he kept his 48th place on the world rankings.

Also in the 1990/91 season Roscoe lost several opening games, the number of which has now increased to seven. In contrast, however, he also reached the round of the last 64 of the Asian Open and the round of the last 32 of the non-ranking tournament International One Frame Shoot-Out as well as the Grand Prix and the UK Championship . He also defeated Dave Gilbert , John Parrott and Eddie Charlton at the British Open before losing to Steve Davis in the round of 16 . As a result, he was able to improve by four places on the world rankings.

Last professional years

In the 1990/91 season Roscoe was able to reduce the number of his opening defeats to five, apart from which he reached the quarter-finals at the invitation tournament World Seniors Championship with a victory over Cliff Thorburn . In the ranking tournaments he reached the round of 64 at the Dubai Classic , the Classic and the European Open and the round of 32 at the Asian Open and Strachan Open . Nevertheless, he lost seven places in the world rankings.

But the big slump followed in the next season , when Roscoe was only able to win his opening game in two of thirteen tournaments. At these two, the second event of the Strachan Challenge and the British Open , he was also eliminated in the following round. On the world rankings this meant a loss of 25 places, so that he was subsequently placed on rank 76.

In the 1993/94 season , Roscoe reduced his tournament participation to nine tournaments. Nevertheless, his series of defeats continued, so that he could only win a single opening game at the Grand Prix against David Rippon before he was defeated by Stephen Lee . At the end of the season he was defeated in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship with 3:10 to the Welsh Dominic Dale . This game was his last professional game. Even though he was ranked 136th in the following season, he did not play any more games before ending his professional career after fourteen years at the end of the 1994/95 season.
