Jack McLaughlin (born January 29, 1959 ) is a Northern Irish snooker player who became a professional player after winning the Northern Irish Snooker Championship in 1984 and stayed that way until 1996. In 1988 he celebrated his greatest success by winning the Irish Professional Championship .

Career

McLaughlin first took part in the Northern Irish Snooker Championship in 1981 , but where he was eliminated in the round of 32. In 1983 he took part in the Northern Championship of the English Amateur Championship , where he reached the final with a victory over Barry West and lost there against Steve Longworth with 8: 7. A year later he won the Northern Irish Snooker Championship by defeating Harry Morgan with a 10-3 in the final . In the same year he became a professional player for the 1984/85 season.

First professional years

McLaughlin played his first professional game in qualifying for the International Open when he defeated David Greaves 5-3. After he failed at the International Open a round later on Canadian Frank Jonik , he lost his second game against Mark Wildman at the Grand Prix . Shortly afterwards he won the UK Championship against Colin Roscoe and Graham Miles , among others , before he had to admit defeat to former world champion Cliff Thorburn in the round of 32 . Shortly thereafter, he moved into the round of 64 at the Classic , before he reached the second round of the Irish professional championship after an opening defeat , where he had to admit defeat after a victory over Dessie Sheehan Jackie Rea . Since he did not play his game in the World Cup qualification at the end of the season, he finished 69th in the world rankings at the end of the season.

In the next season , McLaughlin reached after an opening defeat in four consecutive tournaments, the round of 64, in which he always lost. At the end of the season he lost his game in the World Cup qualifying against his compatriot Tommy Murphy , before he succeeded in a white wash over Paul Watchorn at the Irish professional championship , but then lost to Alex Higgins . In the world rankings he lost two places, so that he was listed in the 71st world rankings in the next season.

At the start of the next season , McLaughlin only reached the round of the last 64 of the International Open and shortly afterwards the round of the last 32 at the Grand Prix , in which he had to admit defeat to Jimmy White . After he had also moved into the round of 64 at the UK Championship and the Classic , he lost his opening game against Dessie Sheehan at the Irish Professional Championship . Entertaining crash and subsequent ascent

Years in the top 60 of the world rankings

After McLaughlin had to take two defeats at the beginning of the 1990/91 season , he reached the round of 16 at the Asian Open with wins over Dave Gilbert , Danny Fowler and Martin Clark , where he lost to John Parrott . By the turn of the year he reached the second round twice and lost one opening game before he made it into the last 64 of the Classics in the new year . After an opening defeat in the men's individual competition of the World Masters , he moved into the round of 64 at the British Open , in which he lost to Jimmy White . At the subsequent European Open in 1991 he profited from his compatriot Alex Higgins ' surrender without a fight after defeating Anthony Harris before he had to admit defeat to Peter Francisco . After a very subdued start to the following season , McLaughlin reached the round of 32 at the Classic with wins over Jason Smith and Tony Jones , in which he was defeated by Nigel Bond . However, another series of opening defeats followed, which ended with a move into the round of the Strachan Open . Then he reached the round of 32 of the European Open before he failed again in the World Cup qualification after two wins in the very last qualifying round to Nigel Bond. At the end of the season he reached the quarterfinals of the Irish professional championship , where he was eliminated by Joe Swail . On the world rankings, he deteriorated five places, so that he finished 54th in the following season.

After two defeats at the start of the 1992/93 season , he reached the round of 64 at the Benson & Hedges Championship , the UK Championship and the first event of the Strachan Challenge , before he won the quarter-finals of the Irish Professional Championship after defeating Dermot McGlinchey lost to Martin O'Neill . After losing his opening game in the second event of the Strachan Challenge , he reached the round of 64 at both the third event and the Welsh Open before suffering two more opening defeats. Then he reached the round of the last 64 of the Asian Open with a victory over Mehmet Husnu , in which he had to admit defeat to the Welshman Darren Morgan . At the end of the season, he lost two more opening games, so that he finished 58th in the world rankings in the coming season.

Last professional years

After a miserable first half of the 1993/94 season - in which he had only won a game at the Benson & Hedges Championship - he reached the round of 64 at the International Open , in which he lost to Jason Ferguson . But by the end of the season he only won one game in each of the two events of the Strachan Challenge , so that he fell to 77th place in the world rankings.

The next season began for McLaughlin with a place in the round of 64 of the Dubai Classics , in which he had to admit defeat Brian Rowswell . After several initial defeats, he was eliminated in the third pre-qualifying round of the first event of the WPBSA Minor Tour and shortly afterwards in the round of 96 against Ian McCulloch and Drew Henry , respectively , before he was eliminated at the Welsh Open after defeating Allison Fisher in the round of last 128 lost to Darren Limburg . After three more defeats in the beginning, he defeated the Englishman Brett Patmore in qualifying for the snooker world championship , before he failed 4:10 to Mark Davis . This defeat was his last professional match for McLaughlin. Even if he was listed in the world number 108 in the following season, he played no more games and was eliminated from the professional tour at the end of the 1995/96 season .
