Paul Watchorn (born July 19, 1958 ) is an Irish Irish folk musician for the band The Dublin Legends and former snooker player .

Career

Watchorn is the brother of Patsy Watchorn , who is also a musician and was a member of The Dubliners for several years . As a snooker player, he first drew attention to himself when he reached the quarter-finals of the Pontins Spring Open in 1979 , but lost there to Paul Medati . A few years later he became a professional player.

First professional years

Watchorn's first professional season was the 1982/83 season , in which Watchorn only played a single game in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship and lost it 0:10 against Joe Johnson . As a result, he did not succeed in placing himself on the world rankings. He did not succeed either when he took part in several tournaments in the next season and was able to win two games and thereby reach the round of 64 at the Classic .

In the 1984/85 season , Watchorn's form of the previous seasons continued mainly; he often dropped out early. However, he managed to move into the round of the last 64 in four tournaments. As a result, he made the jump to the world rankings, even if he was only ranked 93rd. But in the following season he did not manage to win a single game despite several tournaments. So he slipped to 106th place in the world rankings.

Years in the top 128

In the 1986/87 season Watchorn managed to win a few games, but he never got past the round of 96. As a result, he lost seven more places on the world rankings. In the next season , however, he was able to reach the round of 64 at the UK Championship , even if he clearly had to admit defeat to Tony Meo with 1: 9 . He also defeated at the Irish Professional Championship , a non-ranking tournament, Eugene Hughes and moved into the quarterfinals, where he just lost to Jack McLaughlin . In the world rankings, his success at the UK Championship took him back to the top 100; now he was ranked 98th.

The season 1988/89 ran for Watchorn but again without participation in a round of the last 64 of a ranking tournament. In addition to another quarter-final participation in the Irish Professional Championship , he was particularly successful in events in the WPBSA Non-Ranking tournament series ; at the first event he was only eliminated in the quarterfinals. Nevertheless, he slipped on the world rankings at the end of the season to 114th place. However, after he had reached the round of 64 in the following season in both the Classic and the World Snooker Championship , he improved back to 102nd place. But in the following season he again missed a participation in a round of the last 64, so he was only ranked 110th.

Last professional years and further life

In the course of the 1991/92 season , however, Watchorn could not decide a single game apart from a game against Gay Burns at the Irish Professional Championship . In the following three seasons he won a few games again, but was eliminated each time in qualifying. On the world rankings he fell to 297th place. After he did not play any more games, he ended his career as a professional snooker player in 1996.

Then Watchorn appeared as a musician of Irish folk . He is counted among the best Irish players of the five-sided banjo , also appears as a guitar player and singer and has performed worldwide. He played with Derek Warfield and the band The Sons of Erin , among others . He is also a member of the band The Dublin Legends , which among other things initially formed with his brother Patsy from the members of the disbanded band The Dubliners and whose singer is Watchorn.
