The 1983 World Snooker Championship took place from April 16 to May 2, 1983 at the Crucible Theater in Sheffield .
The winner was - for the second time since 1981 - the Englishman Steve Davis , who defeated Cliff Thorburn from Canada 18: 6 in the final .
Thorburn scored the first maximum break of 147 points at a snooker world championship in the fourth frame of his round of 16 against Terry Griffiths and received both the bonus for the highest break of the tournament (including 5,000 pounds bonus for the highest break ever scored at a world championship) and also a special bonus for the maximum of £ 10,000.
It was also the second official maximum break in snooker history; Steve Davis scored the first at the 1982 Classic .
