The 2020 Betfred World Snooker Championship was held from July 31 to August 16, 2020 at the Crucible Theater in Sheffield . The tournament was the final highlight of the 2019/20 season of the Snooker Main Tour .
It was originally supposed to take place from April 18 to May 4, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020, the tournament was initially postponed to a date that has not yet been determined. The new date was announced on April 23.
Defending champion Judd Trump lost in the quarterfinals. The winner was the Englishman Ronnie O'Sullivan , who won his 6th world title with an 18: 8 final victory over Kyren Wilson .
Prize money
The total prize money to be paid out had increased to £ 2.395 million . This increase came because that year participants in the round of 112 also received a bonus of £ 5,000 and the bonus for the highest break was increased to £ 15,000. In return, the £ 1,000 bonus for the highest break in the qualifying round was removed, but the highest break in qualifying also counted for the bonus for the highest break.

Main round
The 16 leading players in the world rankings have been set. Your 16 first-round opponents had to prevail in the qualification beforehand.
Tournament course
Anthony Hamilton canceled his participation in the main round for health reasons. Kyren Wilson got into the round of 16 without a fight. Alexander Ursenbacher was the first Swiss player to make it into the main round of the World Championship, but he was defeated by Barry Hawkins in the first round with 2:10. The first round nevertheless brought some surprises. The qualifiers Kurt Maflin , Jamie Clarke and Noppon Saengkham were able to win their first round games against seeded players, Ronnie O'Sullivan set a new speed record for a first round game in the game against Thepchaiya Un-Nooh when he beat the Thai 10: 1 in 108 minutes suggested, which resulted in a cut of less than 10 minutes per frame. Kurt Maflin was also able to win his second round game against John Higgins with 13:11 and moved into the quarterfinals, where he met the qualifier Anthony McGill , who beat Jamie Clarke after a hard-fought game. So it was clear that a qualifier would advance to the semi-finals. McGill won the qualifying duel with 13:10 and reached the semifinals. Kyren Wilson became the keeper of the curse this year because he defeated Judd Trump in the quarterfinals, who became world champion for the first time the previous year. The Curse of the Crucible says that a first-time world champion has never been able to defend his title in the following year, players who prevent this are jokingly called keepers of the curse .
Tournament schedule
The pairings were drawn on July 29th. The meetings took place from July 31st to August 16th. Traditionally, the reigning world champion played in the first game and the game was directed by the same referee who also directed the final, this year Marcel Eckardt .

Century breaksMain tournamentThe Scot John Higgins managed the 157th maximum break in history in the round of 16 . For Higgins it was the 10th perfect break, but the first at a world championship. Eight years earlier at the 2012 edition , Higgins' compatriot Stephen Hendry had played the last maximum break in the main round of the World Cup. A total of 79 Century Breaks were played during the main round . The record of 2019 with 100 Centuries was far from being reached. Commentators and players attributed this to the fact that the weather conditions in midsummer were completely different from those in spring, especially the high humidity was blamed.
qualification33 players scored a total of 53 Century Breaks.
