Main round

There were already some surprises in the first lap. With Cao Yupeng (10: 6 against Mark Allen ) and Jamie Jones (10: 8 against Shaun Murphy , the 2005 world champion) two of the three Crucible debutants won their opening game. Another surprise was provided by David Gilbert , who beat Martin Gould 10: 8 and, like Andrew Higginson, made it into a World Cup round of 16 for the first time in his career. A total of eight seeded players were eliminated in the first round, setting the record from 1992 .

In the game against Stuart Bingham , Stephen Hendry managed a maximum break , Hendry won the game comparatively clearly with 10: 4. Neil Robertson managed in his opening game as the fourth player in the history of the world championship a " Century - Hattrick " . The other three players were Ronnie O'Sullivan , John Higgins and Mark Selby .

At 17 years and 45 days, Luca Brecel was the youngest participant in the main round of a snooker world championship. He broke the record set by Stephen Hendry (17 years, 99 days) from 1986. In addition, Brecel was the first Belgian player to reach the main round at the Crucible.

Made for negative headlines Mark Allen and Ding Junhui after their opening defeat because of their statements at the press conference: Allen called his opponent Cao Yupeng and other Chinese players there as a "cheat" (dt. Cheaters ). In his opinion, Cao had played a penetration , but the referee Paul Collier did not consider it a foul. According to Allen, Cao should have reported this foul himself in the spirit of gentlemen's sport . However, he also admitted that his opponent had played very well and did not need such actions. Ding Junhui, on the other hand, complained about the bad tables and the audience, calling both of them “rubbish” ( rubbish ). Even in the run-up to the World Cup, there was controversy when Mark Williams commented negatively on Twitter about the Crucible Theater and suggested moving the tournament to another location.

World number one Mark Selby played under his normal form due to injury and was defeated by Barry Hawkins 3:10 in his first round match . After Ali Carter , semi-finalist of the year 2010, had previously played a rather weak season, he showed himself in good form in his first game and clearly defeated Mark Davis 10-2.

After the round of 16, the top five players had already been eliminated. While Judd Trump lost a 12: 9 lead over Allister Carter , John Higgins and Mark Williams each lost their games relatively significantly. With Neil Robertson and Stephen Maguire , only two players from the top ten of the world rankings were there. The Welsh qualifier Jamie Jones reached the quarterfinals of a full world ranking tournament for the first time.

Stephen Hendry, seven times world champion in the 1990s, announced his retirement from professional snooker after his quarter-final defeat by Stephen Maguire.

For the first time there were two female referees, with Zhu Ying for the first time also a Chinese woman. The other referee was Michaela Tabb , who, like in 2009, also led the final.

Round 2-5

After the 7-time world champion Stephen Hendry fell out of the top 16 during the season, he had to qualify for the main round for the first time since 1988 in qualifying round 5. There he beat Yu Delu 10: 6.

In round 4 of the qualification, Steve Davis had to admit defeat to Ben Woollaston, who was almost 30 years his junior , 7:10 and was eliminated from the tournament prematurely.

The Belgian young talent Luca Brecel , standing at 87th place in the world list, was able to move into the main round of the last 32 with four qualifying victories. Other debutants at the Crucible Theater included Chinese Cao Yupeng and Welsh Jamie Jones .

Igor Figueiredo was able to fight his way through the rounds 1–3 in qualifying before he failed in round 4 with 7:10 to Joe Jogia . China took part in the finals for the first time with four players after three players qualified and Ding Junhui was placed by his world rankings.

Peter Ebdon , who won the last tournament before the World Cup with the China Open 2012 , underlined his good form with a smooth 10-0 win over Alfie Burden in his only qualifying game. Robert Milkins scored - for the second time in his career after 2006 - a maximum break in qualifying for the World Cup, but did not reach the finals because he lost to Mark Davis in the last qualifying round .
