Andrew Pagett (born April 25, 1982 in Newport ) is a Welsh snooker player .
Career
Beginnings
Pagett, whose father was a successful pool player, began playing snooker when he was 14. In 1999 he first took part in the Welsh Snooker Championship , he was eliminated in the semifinals against Ian Preece . In 2002 he took part in both the European Championship and the World Championship , but both times he was eliminated in the group stage. A year later he was in the final of the European Championship , but he was defeated by David John 3: 7. Nevertheless, he was able to qualify for the Snooker Main Tour .
First professional years
In his first season he took part in several Challenge Tour events, but apart from the quarter-finals in the second event, he had no successes. In the Masters qualifying event he lost to Mike Dunn in the second round . He was also defeated in the second round of qualifying for the World Snooker Championship , this time against James Reynolds . The following season , Pagett took part in the Challenge Tour events again, but did not make it through the round of 32. In the World Cup qualification, he was eliminated in the third round. At the end of the season he lost his place on the Main Tour.
Amateur years 2005–2008 and professional year 2008/09
In 2005 Pagett won the final of the Welsh Snooker Championship against Michael White . At the IBSF World Grand Prix 2006 - the replacement tournament for the Amateur World Championship in 2005 - Pagett moved into the round of 16, where he was eliminated by Mark Boyle . At the European Championships in 2006 he was eliminated in the round of 32 against Kurt Maflin , at the Amateur World Championship in the same year he was defeated in the second round to the Indian Manan Chandra . In the 2006/07 season he also took part in the PIOS Tour , where he ended up in 39th place in the ranking and thus missed a qualification for the Main Tour. In the following year he was also a participant in the PIOS tour. He reached the final in the second event, which he lost 4-6 against Kuldesh Johal . Since he only reached the round of 32 in the other events, he came in rankings 31st. In the same year he reached the round of 16 of the amateur world championship , which he lost 6-1 against the eventual winner Atthasit Mahitthi . At the European Championships in 2008 he lost in the semifinals against eventual winner David Grace . For the 2008/09 season he got one of the starting places on the professional tour after he had become number one in the ranking of the Welsh Federation. But after a year he was eliminated with only four first round wins in the tournament qualifications.
Amateur years until 2010
The following year Pagett took part in the PIOS tour again. Although he reached a quarter-finals (which he lost to Jamie Jones ) and a round of 16 (which he lost to Alfie Burden ), he came at the end of the season in 38th place. Due to the persistent failure Pagett played with the idea of giving up professional snooker. In 2010 he won the Welsh Championship for the second time by beating Gareth Allen 8-0 . Thus he remained number one at regional level, which is why he got another chance with the professionals in the 2010/11 season . In addition, he reached the quarter-finals of the European Championship , which he lost 2: 5 against the Icelandic Kristjan Helgason .
Professional years 2010–2012
In the second event of the newly created Players Tour Championship , a series of minor ranking tournaments, he made it to the quarter-finals, where he lost to Marco Fu . In the third event he made it to the round of 16, where he was eliminated by Anthony Hamilton . But before the China Open , Pagett experienced another series of unsuccessful events, especially in ranking tournaments. At the snooker world championship , in contrast to the season, he caused a surprise. He fought his way through all four qualifying rounds, defeating Nigel Bond and Andrew Higginson , making it the first time in the main round of a World Cup. Even though he lost 7:10 to Jamie Cope there , he climbed to 71st place on the world rankings .
In the next season he continued his failure, he reached the round of 32 at PTC tournaments only twice during the entire season. He finished the season in world number 84, so that he lost his Main Tour status for the third time.
Amateur year 2012/13
The next season Pagett took part in the Players Tour Championship as an amateur . He managed to get into the round of 16 in the first event , which he lost to Stephen Maguire 2: 4. After two initial defeats, he was able to defeat England's Stuart Bingham , Thepchaiya Un-Nooh and Neil Robertson at the Antwerp Open , so that he was in the semifinals. He lost 4-1 to eventual winner Mark Allen . In another three events Pagett lost in the first round. But the round of 16 and semi-finals were enough for a Main Tour qualification on the PTC rankings.
Professional years 2013–2015
After a subdued start to the season , Pagett managed to get into the round of 16 at the Yixing Open , which he lost 2: 4 to Scott Donaldson . After several early tournament defeats, Pagett played in the 6-Red World Championship . Surprisingly, he survived the group stage, as he defeated Barry Hawkins and had only two defeats in five games (against Ricky Walden and Steve Davis ). In the round of 32, he lost to Robert Murphy . Again a series of early tournament defeats followed. It was only at the Antwerp Open that he was able to move into the round of 32, but he lost to Tony Drago . At the Welsh Open he also moved into the main round, where Stephen Maguire threw him out of the tournament. In the World Championship qualification, he lost his opening game with 2:10 against Zhang Anda . Pagett finished the season at world number 103.
His seventh season as a professional began with an elimination in the third qualifying round for the Australian Goldfields Open . His second participation in the 6-Red World Championship was not as successful as the first, he was eliminated with only one win in the group stage. Numerous early defeats followed during the rest of the season. Only in the Bulgarian Open and Indian Open he reached the Round of 32 in the qualifiers for the World Snooker Championship he lost after a victory over Lu Haotian against Alan McManus . It was supposed to be his last professional game for the time being, because at the end of the season he was world number 80 , which was not enough for a qualification for the next season. Pagett then announced his retirement from professional snooker.
Amateur time from 2015
A year after retiring from the Main Tour, Pagett returned to the Welsh Championship. He lost in the semifinals against ex-professional Darren Morgan . In the 2016/17 season Pagett was allowed to start the 6-Red World Championship , but he was eliminated as bottom of the table in the group stage. Also in 2016, after victories over Ahmed Saif , Lucky Vatnani and Pankaj Advani, he was in the final of the amateur world championship , which he lost to Soheil Vahedi 8-1 .
In 2017, Pagett returned to the Welsh Amateur Championship, this time knocking out Jamie Rhys Clarke in the round of 32 . At the European Championships in the same year he made it to the semi-finals, but lost it 3: 6 against Andres Petrov . In the next season Pagett took part in numerous tournaments. At the European 6-Reds Championship 2016 he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Tyler Rees , at the European Snooker Open 2017 he lost the quarter-finals to compatriot Darren Morgan . At the World Games in Breslau, he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Alexander Ursenbacher . In the round of 32 of the 2017 IBSF 6-Reds World Championship , he lost to Saleh Mohammadi . He also took part in the 2017 World Amateur Championship , where he was eliminated in the round of 32. At the European Snookere Championship 2018 Pagett made it to the round of 16, where Brendan O'Donoghue defeated him 2-5. At the WSF Championship 2018 he was eliminated in the group stage.
Pagett dared to try again for a re-qualification at the Q School 2018. In the first event he was most successful with a place in the round of 64, he lost to Laxman Rawat. In the second event he lost to the German Umut Dikme in the first round , and in the third event he lost to James Cahil in the second round . In August he took part in the Paul Hunter Classic , where he qualified for the main round with 4-0 wins. There he lost to Mark Davis after a 4-1 win over Ashley Hugill in the second round .
