Kuldesh Johal (born September 25, 1980 in Huddersfield ) is an English snooker player from Leeds .

Career

At the age of 17, Kuldesh Johal tried unsuccessfully for the first time in qualifying for two professional tournaments. In 2000 he won the Pontins Autumn Open, an amateur tournament with professional participation in Prestatyn, Welsh . From this year he also played on the Challenge Tour and in his second year reached the round of 32 twice. In 2003/04 there were two quarter-finals on the balance sheet. Successful years were always followed by setbacks, and that remained so with the introduction of the Pontin's International Open Series . He won his first qualifying tournament in 2007 with the fourth tournament in the series, in which he defeated Craig Steadman , Leo Fernandez and Lee Walker in the final. Despite another quarter-finals and a second round, he did not make it into the top eight of the PIOS rating. In the 2007/08 season he reached the semi-finals in tournament 1, winning tournament number 2 against Andrew Pagett and the sixth tournament against Simon Bedford . With two additional quarter-finals, he set a new maximum number of points in the overall standings and, as the tour winner, qualified for the Snooker Main Tour .

He started his first professional season in 2008/09 with two opening wins. At the UK Championship and the China Open he reached round 3. He defeated players such as Paul Davies , Barry Pinches and Joe Swail , among others . In addition, there were too many first round defeats, in particular the 8:10 opening defeat at the World Cup against Jin Long cost him too many points. As 80th in the world snooker rankings , he did not qualify for another year.

Then Johal tried again in the PIOS tour, but did not get past a quarter-finals in the third tournament. As one of the top 16 players in England he took part in the EASB Pro Ticket tournament in June 2010 and won against Robbie Williams in the final. Thereby he got the wildcard of the English association EASB for participation in the professional season 2010/11 .

In the newly created Players Tour Championship , he achieved his best professional result in the second tournament with the round of 32. A long series of first round defeats followed. Only in the last three tournaments of the season he achieved individual wins and although he first reached round 2 at the World Cup with a 10: 8 win over Liam Highfield . He even forgave another victory, among other things, because he lost a frame without a fight at 6: 7 by being late from the break and finally lost 7:10 to Jack Lisowski . In the end, he only finished 86th in the world rankings and lost his professional status again.

After that, Johal gave up his professional ambitions and opened a small post office and grocery store in Leeds . He only played amateur snooker on the side. After the positive development in professional snooker, he made another serious attempt in 2015 via the Q School . In the second tournament he made it to the group finals, but lost 4-2 to Jason Weston . As a result, he didn't get on the Main Tour, but as one of the best Q-School losers, he got some of the free places in the qualification of the professional tournaments in the 2015/16 season. However, he could not use any of the five chances to advance to the main tournament or a higher round.

In the following two years he tried it on with the Q-School tournaments, but dropped out early. At the Paul Hunter Classic 2017 , which is open to amateurs , he qualified for the main round and with a bye he made it to round 2.
