Prestatyn is a community status seaside resort in Denbighshire in northern Wales . In 2001 the place had 18,496 inhabitants.

history

The city developed in the middle of the 12th century around the castle built on the orders of King Henry II , which was built in 1157 by Robert de Banastre . It consisted of a wooden moth about 20 meters in diameter and a stone courtyard. From around 1160 Robert de Crevecoeur acted as lord of the castle because Banastre had moved to Lancashire with the Normans . Ten years after its construction, in 1167, the castle was finally razed by the Welsh Prince Owain Gwynedd . In 1297 some remains of the castle courtyard wall were still visible. However, these are no longer available today, so that there is hardly anything to suggest that there was once a castle in Prestatyn.

Geography and climate

Prestatyn is located in the middle of the Clwyd border with England in the immediate vicinity of Rhyl and Towyn . In the west is the Snowdonia National Park with its mountains up to 1,000 meters high.

The average annual rainfall is lower than in the rest of Wales, as the clouds coming from the Atlantic in westerly winds rain down over the mountains of Snowdonia before they reach Prestatyn. The amount of snow in winter is also relatively low.

In Prestatyn in 1946 the highest temperature in November in the whole of the United Kingdom was measured at just under 22 degrees Celsius.

tourism

Prestatyn beach

Prestatyn is particularly popular with English families as a holiday destination, as it is located directly on the Irish Sea and has relatively wide sandy beaches.

The city is at the north end of the Offa's Dyke Path . There is also the Offa's Dyke Path Center, an information center about the trail, its history and the eponymous Offa's Dyke , an earth wall built in the 8th century by King Offa von Mercien .
