Corwen is a hamlet and community in the county of Denbighshire , Wales . At the 2001 census, Corwen had 2,398 inhabitants. Corwen is on the banks of the River Dee , below the Berwyn Mountains. It is located 16 km west of Llangollen and 21 km south of Ruthin .

history

Corwen is known for his association with Owain Glyndŵr , the last Prince of Wales , a descendant of the Princes of Powys . A feud in September 1400 led to an uprising against English rule . A life-size bronze statue of him on his warhorse was installed in 2007. It commemorates the day when he was proclaimed the last true Prince of Wales in 1400.

The city developed into a center for drovers. Other attractions in Corwen include the motte of a Norman castle, the thirteenth century church of St. Mael and St. Sulien and the Capel Rûg from 1637 by William Salesbury.

Economy and Infrastructure

Corwen is in an agricultural area. The industrial employer is the manufacture for livestock trailers Ifor Williams Trailers . The connection to the national railway connection with a train station in 1864 was important for the development of Corwen.

Corwen is also the last major city located on the A5, which leads from London to Holyhead. Therefore there are a large number of hotels in Corwen. Meanwhile the A5 is no longer the most important connection to Holyhead, it has been replaced by the A55. However, there is still a lot of traffic through the narrow streets of the city center.

Corwen hosted the National Eisteddfod of Wales, the most important eisteddfod event in Wales in 1919. Corwen also hosted several eisteddfod events. Corwen played an important role in 20th century Welsh culture. Edward H. Dafis, the first rock band in Welsh, gave their first concerts in Corwen in August 1973.

The author John Cowper Powys lived in Corwen from 1935 to 1955.
